Safety on Campus

One of the very first words in our school's mission statement is safety. That was intentional, and we take it seriously in all its forms from our campus facilities to the interpersonal relationships between students.  We encourage you to ask us about specific safety issues that might concern you as you consider enrolling your child at Foothill Country Day School. In the challenging environment we now live in, we believe we are the safest school in the Inland Empire.

Here are just a few of the ways we keep our students safe:

Safety Planning

  • Our faculty and staff KNOW our students. They know who their parents are, their health needs and their friends. No one falls through the cracks or goes unnoticed at Foothill or Seedling. Through close relationships with our students, including the Upper School Advisory Program, our students can feel comfortable coming to us with information and safety observations.
  • We have an extensive, written crisis plan for a variety of emergencies including earthquakes, fire, bomb threats, and active shooters. This plan includes components for search and rescue, communications, first aid, family reunions and more.
  • All our employees are trained to use Epi-Pens, Narcan, the anti-choking device LifeVac, and the AEDs we have located in several campus locations.
  • Emergency supplies are in each classroom, with age-appropriate items (for instance, The Seedling School students have family-created comfort packages and sugar-free lollipops).
  • We have relationships with local police and fire departments.
  • We store enough emergency food and water supplies for all our students and faculty, for several days.
  • We utilize an emergency texting system, Bright Arrow, where each family can be immediately notified and updated in an emergency.
  • Monthly drills are held for earthquakes, fire, and active shooter incidents.

Staff Training

  • All our employees maintain Pediatric First Aid and CPR certifications.
  • Faculty and staff attend yearly training on our school's specific crisis plan, and each is assigned to a specific crisis team.
  • All employees have passed FBI-level fingerprint checks, have child abuse training and recognize their role as mandated reporters.

Student Health

  • We have a full-time nurse, who oversees our health policies and cares for students on a daily basis.
  • We employ a dismissal app, PikMyKid, that is designed to keep traffic at dismissal times flowing, but it also serves as a family reunion mechanism during emergencies.
  • We keep updated allergy and illness lists, available in all classrooms.
  • We are an allergy-aware campus.
  • Daily social-emotional check-ins occur every day, at every grade level. In Upper School, our students also enjoy an Advisory Program where curriculum is designed to support those needs and keep communication open.

Facilities

  • We have a closed campus: entrances at both Seedling and the Main Office are have locked doors with passcodes.
  • All visitors and contractors must sign in at our office and get a visitor name badge. Our employees wear name badges so that in an emergency, children and first responders can quickly identify us as "helpers".
  • Our campus is fully fenced and buildings are alarmed.
  • Security cameras are located around all exterior areas of campus.
  • We have shatterproof window film on windows.
  • Our public address system is school-wide, allowing for quick communication.
  • Multiple generators are used should utilities be affected by an emergency.
  • We use all-natural pesticides to ward off bugs on our campus.
  • We have a large variety of emergency equipment including extinguishers, 2nd story ladders, and more.
