Falcons in the Wild: Community Service
...We are united in pursuing intellectual inquiry, academic excellence, integrity, and service to others. We develop awareness beyond ourselves through service to others." Foothill Country Day School Mission and Core Values
Foothill Falcons make an impact on our campus, in our local community and across the world. Community service projects vary, and we evaluate our plan each year in order to be the most effective with our time and resources, but they typically include:
Worldwide
Kenya Club is an enduring afterschool club that students may join from grades 4 - 8. Members raise money throughout the year via bake sales and "Buddy up for Change", where Kenya Club members lead the campus in gathering coins, to our partner school in the Ndeiya Valley in Kenya. In the past, we have raised money for books and supplies, but our current focus is goats. Thanks to the support of many Foothill families, goats have been purchased to give to young people there in a project that teaches them to be responsible goat owners, leading to financial independence for the local community. Watch a video about our impact here.
In Our Local Community
Bounty of Blessings is a united, school-wide effort to support Foothill Family Shelter. Each fall, we ask our families to bring one item to contribute, designated by grade. The Seedling School (preschool) donated laundry items, grades K - 5 donated household and personal items, and grades 6-8 donated breakfast items. A faculty committee then decorated the buckets and added a personal notes from students in each one. The goal is to make sure each family has a solid start toward their new life.
Socktober is led by our BWO Parents. Hundreds of pairs of socks are gathered for Foothill Family Shelter for Shoes That Fit.
San Antonio Gardens Retirement Community is the destination for our preschool and kindergarten students. They often visit to perform, trick or treat, or do intergenerational craft activities.
Other local projects that have organized on our campus in recent years:
- Grades 7 & 8 iPad instruction for the seniors at San Antonio Gardens
- Toy drive for Warrior for Children
- Vaccine clinics hosted during COVID pandemic
- PPE masks and emergency supplies donated to Pomona Valley Community Hospital, San Antonio Community Hospital, and Kaiser Fontana for first responders during COVID
- Tree planting and clean up in local parks for City of Claremont/Sustainable Claremont
- 3rd grade pen pals with senior citizens
- Gathering of aid supplies for families impacted by the earthquakes in Turkey
- 3rd, 4th and 7th grade care packages for active duty military with Operation Community Cares. Students donated leftover Halloween candy and wrote letters to the troops, with some students volunteering at the sorting event.
- Foothill's Summer Program has tasked students with creating a community service project. Those students took the leadership roles and created projects to benefit homeless shelters and Priceless Pets Rescue, and Water.org
- 6th, 7th and 8th grade program for GiveLight
- Partnership with the Claremont Colleges for grad students to do research with our students
- Discounted facility rentals of our auditorium, gym and classrooms to local non-profit organizations
- Education events offered to local schools who need continuing education units such as Preschool Director Brunch.
Within Our Own "Nest"
8th grade raises money for a gift to the school as their legacy. You can see them all around campus if you look closely! Clocks, drinking fountains, benches, scoreboards and more were donated to the school by a graduating class each year.
