It's All About You

  • What is Individualized Learning?  It is all about you! Individualization refers to instruction that is paced to the learning needs of different students. Learning goals are the same for all students, but each child can progress through the material at different speeds according to their learning needs. For example, students might take longer to progress through a given topic, skip topics that cover information they already know, or repeat topics that require more time to master.

Data-Driven and Strengths-Based Approach to MasteryThe Foothill Digital curriculum is inspired and guided by the same standards and rigor of the Foothill Country Day School curriculum that prepares our students for admission to some of the most selective high schools and colleges across the country. The Foothill Digital curriculum is not a pre-packaged, or an out-sourced product. It has been thoughtfully designed by Foothill teachers for flexibility and responsiveness to the needs of the online learner.

Your child's journey starts in the admission process with the same standardized assessments we use for all Upper School students, such as STAR, ISEE, prior teacher recommendations, and portfolios. We will meet with your family to discuss your child's interests, needs, and goals and will design a custom learning pathway just for your child.

Once enrolled in Foothill Digital, ongoing assessment in a variety of forms including tests, projects, and work samples will help to identify strengths upon which to build, target areas for improvement, calibrate the pace of instruction, and provide real-time picture of your student's progress. This process establishes a student's foundation over time, paced to their learning needs, so they spend the time necessary to master content and move on to more challenging concepts and skills. All this is monitored continually by your child's Learning Success Coach who will personally oversee your child's educational plan.

Schedules Individualized by Need, Designed for Learning and FreedomFoothill Digital isn't constrained by the traditional schedule of an in-person school setting, so schedules and instructional priorities will vary by individual needs. Your child's weekly schedule will include the core curriculum of mathematics, history, science, English, foreign language  and the arts. Students are engaged through live and asynchronous instruction. For most students, that's about 20-25 hours per week in coursework and engagement with teachers. As a result, your family's daily schedule will be much more open and your child will be free to pursue the interests that they love. Many online students are accomplished athletes, artists and travelers, and Foothill Digital allows them to explore their gifts and interests without sacrificing their education.

Multiple Ways to MasteryFoothill Digital employs three learning pathways designed to guide each student at an individualized pace toward content mastery. Each pathway includes a minimum amount of time a student is required to meet with a faculty member for one-on-one weekly instruction in each subject area. The rest of the student's week is spent reading, researching, performing experiments, building projects, and viewing lessons and information online. Ongoing assessment informs each student's pace along their pathway and determines the amount of weekly instructional time for each subject area. Typically, the direct instruction time ranges from 30 minutes to one hour per subject area each week. These sessions are dedicated to direct instruction, support on assigments, and deepending understanding of material being presented asynchronously (videos, research, projects, etc).

Ongoing Assessment Ensures a Flexible ApproachOngoing assessment ensures that flexibility and responsiveness remain integral to the Foothill Digital experience. Your student's strengths and needs change over time, so their pathway -- supported by data -- can vary by subject or change as the student develops and masters the content. We believe you will be amazed at the amount of progress your child can make in the focused, individual environment of Foothill Digital!

As a bonus, your family's daily schedule will be much more open. Your child will be free to pursue the interests that they love. Many online students are accomplished athletes, artists and travelers, and Foothill Digital allows them to explore their gifts and interests without sacrificing their education.
