The Children's Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA) is a law passed in 1998 that "details what a website operator must include in a privacy policy, when and how to seek verifiable consent from a parent or guardian, and what responsibilities an operator has to protect children's privacy and safety online including restrictions on the marketing to those under 13. While children under 13 can legally give out personal information with their parents' permission, many websites altogether disallow underage children from using their services due to the amount of paperwork involved." (Wikipedia)
There are websites that are used as part of the school's curriculum that require that students log on and provide personal information. These websites are intended to enhance the learning or teaching process and have been vetted for appropriateness by a teacher or administrator. Furthermore, the Terms of Service for each of these services are reviewed to ensure that (1) our students' age matches their terms and (2) they take reasonable steps to comply with COPPA.
In an effort to aid 3rd parties to comply with COPPA we may contact parents with opt-in permission slips for students under 13 years of age. These permission slips will be kept by the teacher that is conducting the lesson or in the school's Helpdesk. We will make reasonable accommodations for any student whose parent chooses not to opt-in to a specific digital initiative. In these cases the parent and student will work directly with the teacher to arrive at the most appropriate solution.Unencrypted Electronic Transmission of Personal Information
Any communication or material that is transmitted to the school by electronic mail or otherwise, including data, questions, comments, suggestions, or the like will be treated as confidential unless that transmission is encrypted and states that the content should be treated as confidential.
Additionally, when using the school's campus network, all communication can be logged and inspected. Users and Visitors to the campus that utilize these information services are subject to this level of monitoring.Privacy Questions
